Specification and wall thickness of LSAW steel pipes commonly used in the field of oil and gas trans

In the field of oil and gas transportation, there are various commonly used LSAW Steel Pipe specifications and wall thicknesses. The following are some common situations:

Classified by pipe diameter range

Small and medium-sized pipe diameter:

LSAW steel pipes with a diameter of 406.4mm (16 inches), commonly available in wall thicknesses such as 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, etc., are suitable for some gathering and transportation pipelines or relatively low-pressure transportation links.

Steel pipes with a diameter of 610mm (24 inches) and wall thicknesses of 10mm, 12.5mm, 14.3mm, etc. can be used for oil and gas transportation on land or in shallow waters and can withstand certain pressures.

Large pipe diameter:

LSAW steel pipes with a diameter of 1016mm (40 inches) are commonly used in long-distance pipelines, with wall thicknesses typically ranging from 14.6mm, 16mm, 18.4mm, and 20mm. They are used for high-pressure, high flow long-distance transportation of oil and gas.

Steel pipes with a diameter of 1219mm (48 inches) and a wall thickness of 16mm, 19.1mm, 22.2mm, etc. are suitable for large oil and gas transmission pipelines and can meet the requirements of high pressure and high transmission capacity.

LSAW steel pipes with a diameter of 1422.4mm (56 inches) and a wall thickness of up to 20mm, 22mm, 25.4mm, etc. are commonly used in large-scale oil and gas transportation projects, such as cross-border or cross regional long-distance pipelines.

Classified by steel grade

Low steel grade: such as L245 steel grade, when the pipe diameter is 406.4mm610mm, the wall thickness is generally 6mm10mm, which is suitable for some oil and gas gathering and transmission branch lines or low-pressure transmission parts that do not require particularly high strength.

Medium to high steel grades: For steel pipes with diameters of 813mm and 1219mm, such as X60 and X70, the wall thickness is usually 12mm and 20mm; For X80 steel grade pipelines with large diameters (such as 1016mm and above), the wall thickness may be around 14mm22mm to meet the demand for oil and gas transportation under high strength and pressure.

The commonly used LSAW steel pipe standards in the field of oil and gas transportation are as follows:

Chinese standards:

GB/T 9711-2023 "Steel Pipes for Pipeline Transportation Systems in the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry" specifies the technical delivery conditions for seamless and welded steel pipes made of non alloy and alloy steels (excluding stainless steel) used for transporting flammable and non flammable fluids (including water) in the petroleum and natural gas industry, covering various requirements such as size, shape, weight, technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules, marking, packaging, transportation, and inventory of steel pipes.

SY/T 5037-2018 "Spiral Seam Submerged Arc Welded Steel Pipes for Ordinary Fluid Transport Pipelines": mainly for spiral seam submerged arc welded steel pipes used for general fluid transport pipelines, it clarifies the classification, materials, manufacturing, testing, inspection, and quality evaluation requirements of spiral steel pipes, and is applicable to the production and inspection of spiral steel pipes for ordinary fluid transport pipelines such as water, sewage, air, heating steam, etc. Although it is not specifically designed for LSAW steel pipes, it may also be referenced in some oil and gas gathering and transportation processes where transportation requirements are not particularly high.

Foreign standards:

API SPEC 5L "Pipeline Steel Pipe Specification": developed by the American Petroleum Institute and widely used in the international oil and gas industry. This standard is divided into two levels: PSL1 and PSL2. PSL2 has stricter requirements, including detailed regulations on the chemical composition, mechanical properties, non-destructive testing, and other aspects of steel pipes. It is applicable to long-distance transmission pipelines for media such as oil and natural gas.

ASTM A53 "Specification for Welded and Seamless Steel Tubes": published by the American Society for Testing and Materials, it is applicable to welded and seamless steel tubes for general use, and specifies the technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules, and other contents of steel tubes.
